Nutrition
is fast becoming the number one issue for both children and health conscious
people. The Food Guide Pyramid, published by the United
States Department of Agriculture, is an important guide to healthy eating.
This guide features fruit as a key element, providing essential vitamins,
minerals and disease-fighting phytochemicals. Two to four servings of fruit
per day are recommended. The Food Guide Pyramid has established 6 ounces
(3/4 cup) of 100% juice to be equal to one serving of fruit (this size is
approximately 1.5 servings of a diabetic exchange; for more information
consult with a dietician or nutritionist).
The Food and Nutrition
Board of the National Research Council, an arm of the National Academy of
Sciences, sets the Dietary
Reference Intakes (DRI's; formerly the Recommended Daily allowances
or RDA's) levels for nutrients deemed necessary for good health. The DRI's
are periodically updated to take into account new research. Many believe
the current level for Vitamin C of 60 milligrams (mg) to be too low. A similar,
but unrelated body, the National
Institutes of Health, has recommended that the level of Vitamin C be
increased to 100-200 mg per day for optimum health. In that regard, all
juice products in the Fruitful line are fortified with Vitamin C. Six ounces
of a Fruitful juice provides 150 mg of Vitamin C.
